what is AC Moulded Case Circuit Breaker, MCCB?

2026-04-24

AC moulded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) are robust protective devices designed for low-voltage power distribution systems with rated currents typically ranging from 63A up to 1600A or more. Unlike miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) used for final branch circuits, MCCBs serve as main or feeder protection in industrial plants, commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects where higher fault currents and adjustable protection parameters are required.

The primary function of an MCCB is to reliably interrupt electrical faults—including overloads, short circuits, and in some designs, undervoltage or phase loss—while maintaining thermal and magnetic trip coordination. Most MCCBs feature adjustable thermal magnetic trip units, allowing engineers to set long-time pickup current, short-time pickup, and instantaneous trip thresholds. This flexibility is essential for selectively coordinating multiple breakers in series, ensuring that only the faulty downstream breaker trips while upstream breakers remain closed, thus minimizing system downtime.

Advanced versions of AC MCCBs incorporate electronic trip units (ETUs) with microprocessor-based controls, offering precise protection curves, zone-selective interlocking (ZSI), and communication capabilities such as Modbus or PROFIBUS. These smart MCCBs can also monitor real-time current, voltage, power quality, and even predict maintenance needs.

Another key advantage of the moulded case design is its compact, sealed housing made of insulating thermoplastic or thermoset materials. This enclosure enhances arc extinction, mechanical durability, and operator safety. High-end MCCBs achieve breaking capacities (Icu) from 25kA to over 150kA at 415V AC, suitable for installations near transformers or generators.

Standards governing MCCB performance include IEC 60947-2 and UL 489. Common applications range from motor control centers and panelboards to welding equipment, HVAC systems, and elevator feeders. With rising demand for smart energy management, MCCBs now often integrate remote trip, status indication, and load shedding functions.

In summary, the AC moulded case circuit breaker is the backbone of selective and reliable power distribution in heavy-duty environments. Its adjustable protection, high breaking capacity, and rugged enclosure make it indispensable for safeguarding critical equipment, reducing arc flash hazards, and maintaining operational continuity in factories, data centers, hospitals, and large commercial complexes worldwide.
